Anacapa Island is a jewel in the Channel Island National Park, just 12 miles off the coast of Southern California.  Historically, Anacapa provided critical nesting habitat for seabirds such as the endangered Xantus' Murrelet.  But researchers have documented widespread predation by the non-native black rat on seabird eggs and chicks. Because rats are responsible for an estimated 60% of the world's extinctions, the problem becomes clear: remove the rats or face continuing pressure on the island's species. This half hour program documents the challenging journey of scientists and land managers to rid Anacapa Island of the rat, thereby restoring balance to a critical habitat for seabirds and other island resources for generations to come.

Restoring Balance has aired on select PBS stations and was featured at the Hazel Wolf Environmental Film Festival.
